FTP Uploading

After your web site is designed, the next thing you’ll need to do is to upload your files to the server using ftp. Ftp simply stands for file transfer protocol. To do that you must have a ftp software program. There are several free ftp software in the market and the one i’m using right now is smartftp and it’s free. I always try to go for freebies unless it’s totally necessary to pay. To get started, click on the link below to begin downloading.

Now that you’ve downloaded the program, it’s time to learn how to use it. The program itself actually contains a tutorial but here i will explain it briefly. I assume you are running the program now.

1. Go to file and click on new remote browser. This actually means it will connect to the server. In order to do this you must key in the address, username and password. e.g. Address – ftp .yourdomainname.com username – your username and password – your password. Take note of the ftp. in front for the address. You must key in that or it will not work. Port is by default 21 so don’t worry about that.

2. Go to file again and click on new local browser. This browser will open on the right and it refers to your local files.

3. To upload files you actually get it from the local browser to the remote browser. Before this, make sure your initial file is named index.html or index.htm in the local browser. If the initial file is not named such then nothing will appear on the screen. As for the rest of the files you can name it whatever you like.

4. Now that you’ve got the name correct, left click on the file index.html in the local browser and drag it to public_html folder in the remote browser. The remote browser consists of the left and right section. Left section refers to the root directory and right section refers to the file and folders under it. e.g. highlight the public_html folder on the left and its file and folders will appear on the right. Now just click whatever files you want to upload from the local browser and drag it to the right section of the remote browser.

5. Once you’ve done so the program will do a file transfer to the server. Take not that you should highlight on th epublic_html folder and press on F5 after every transfer to ensure it’s updated.

6. Open a new window and type in your website url. You will see the screen as those of your file. Simple right?

7. Lastly, if your file contains any images, make sure you do a file transfer of those images over as well.
