Using FTP For Your Website Navigation

Updating your website with new content is an ongoing job and it is also the key in making a website successful because the constant update of useful information will make your visitors return more often creating a deeper connection every time they fell that your information has helped them. This will increase your website’s search engine ranking and therefore making your website more popular. Then, you can monetize your website when the time is right. However, updating the contents onto your website can be a tedious job if you are doing it one at a time manually by using your control panel. A more effective way of doing this is by using the FTP client. It enables users to upload and download files from your web server and the best thing is that you can automate the process.

One FTP client that i would recommend is the Filezilla. If you haven’t got any, you can download it. It is free and easy to use. Once you have installed it, run it and you will be able to see a user interface that separates into 4 different columns. Each of the columns represents the location of files located in your local computer and also the web server. On the left will be the one representing your hard drive while the one on the right will be the web server. You will be able to see clearly the files that are in each area. They even show it collapsible folders to make things easy for you to search and save space on the screen. It is not a complicated thing to use once you explore it a little bit.

In order for you to view the files located in your web server, you need to make a connection with it. To do this, you need to setup a FTP account in your hosting account. This can be done in the control panel. Once it is created, you will be given a login name and password which you need to use it for the FTP software. After you logged in, all the file locate in your web server will appear in the right column of the interface. Most people will get confused with this because they don’t know which files are from where. It is basically 2 locations like you have in a normal computer. One is hard drive A and the other one is B. A is you computer hard drive while B is the web server. That’s all to it.

So, the next step is to know where you can locate the file for your website. In order to do that, you will have to find the folder that says public_HTML. This is where the files usually are. If you have more than one website in that hosting account, there will be different directories for it but all will be in this public_HTML folder. It will usually display the name of the domain but if it doesn’t it might be ‘www’ like for my case. So, to upload a file onto this folder, all you need to do is to point your mouse on the file that you would like to upload at the column of your hard drive, right click and select the upload option. Then you will be able to see the process of the file being uploaded. Once the process is completed, you files re successfully uploaded. It is as simple as that. Learning to use the FTP client effectively will be very good for managing your content in your website. it is something that all webmasters should know and should learn.

Direct Web FTP File Transfer – How to Do a Secure Direct File Transfer Between FTP Servers?

There is no need to explain the basic features of an FTP protocol. Unlike the HTTP file protocol, FTP is often considered a more hassle free file transfer mechanism. For one thing, it supports any file size and is more stable than HTTP connections. You can also easily resume file downloads/uploads in case of lost Internet connection or other technical problems.

One of the most common questions people have is how to do a direct FTP file transfer between two servers.

It is no secret that most FTP software programs would only go so far as to allow an indirect file transfer. In other words, you will first need to download all the files to your computer using one of such FTP clients, and then upload them back onto the server of your destination.

Some programs and scripts automate this process, but they will still need to use your computer’s hard drive as an intermediate step, which might definitely use up your available bandwidth and, depending on your Internet connection, take hours to complete. Clearly, this is not the most efficient way to do a file transfer.

An SSH transfer is certainly a safer and faster alternative to an FTP transfer. But not all web hosting plans and providers provide SSH access for their customers. SSH access can be restricted for security reasons as well.

If you are looking for a hassle-free direct FTP file transfer solution, your best bet is to use a web FTP transfer application. These easy-to-use applications allow one-click file transfers between FTP servers. You can transfer entire directories with only one click of a mouse.

But the best news is that you will not need to use your own Internet connection to do an FTP transfer – powerful servers and high speed / high bandwidth network connectivity will ensure that your files are moved in one swift action. You can also run your transfer in the background mode, if your Internet connection is unstable, resume and schedule your transfers as needed.

Using the FTP Client to Update a Website

Having a website for your online business today is definitely an advantage because it can be seamless and international. Updating your website with new content is a very important factor to keep your website up to date so that your circle of readers or customers receives new ideas and information all the time. This task can sometimes be a little challenging. To ease this process, webmasters can utilize the function called FTP client. FTP client is a tool that allows you to upload files to you server or website. Instead of uploading a file one by one in the control panel, the FTP client can help you automate this process. This saves you the time and frustration.

Webmasters can easily obtain FTP client software because there are many free sources in the internet. One that I would recommend is called Filezilla. It will display a user interface that allows users to see four sections that clearly shows the files listed in your computer or your web server. The files will be located in folders and as you click to expand it, it will drop down a list showing all the content that is in that folder. Basically, the operation of Filezilla is like moving files from one folder to another in your computer. But in this case, you are moving the files from your computer to the web server.

Connecting your web server to you computer will be easy. All you need to do is to setup an FTP account in your hosting account though your control panel. You can create it and you will be given log in details. With that detail, you can log into your web server using your FTP software. After you logged in, you will be able to see all the files that is in your web server. Those who do not have some knowledge about this will find this a little confusing because all they see is folders and folders.

It is all about knowing where your files are located. Commonly, your website’s directory will be in the public_HTML folder. Once you locate that older, expend it by double clicking or clicking on the plus sign. After that, you will be able to see a list of folders. In those lists, there will usually be a folder called ‘www’ or a folder with your domain name. It is always very easy to find. Once you find that file, you can upload files onto it by selecting the files from your computer. Another way is to drag the file from the computer section to the server section. Once you do that, you will see a task being process, once the task is completed.

So, although the FTP client is not easy to use, you will definitely get the hang of it after a few times using it. It definitely helps in uploading files onto your server. So, if you want to utilize your time, you will have to learn how to use it eventually.
